Our work with University College of the North (UCN) was completed in 2009. We worked with UCN to develop a unique facility for 70 children in two Northern locations. Working closely with a childcare licencing coordinator, we developed a range of possibilities to meet the needs of Aboriginal and Northern people in a creative and sensitive manner. We worked with community members of all ages, educators and Elders. We understand that children and families are at the centre of communities and community development. The UCN childcare facilities were intended to be more than daycare centres. These facilities were to integrate a support network for parents and families. Each centre was meant to respond to the unique qualities of the North and actively engage with Aboriginal culture, climate and community. The planning process was widely supported by all participants and the project leaders.
