CHRT 41 Shoal Lake 40 Prevention Centre

Shoal Lake 40, ON

Year:  Under Construction
Location:  Shoal Lake 40, ON
Client:  Shoal Lake 40 First Nation

The Shoal Lake 40 Prevention Centre is currently under construction as a vital 16,400 SF addition to the community’s child and family services. Developed in partnership with Indigenous Services Canada, the project includes a dedicated Prevention Building and an adjoining garage to support program operations. The facility reflects a culturally sensitive approach that prioritizes community needs and healing.

Scheduled for completion in early 2026, the centre will offer safe, welcoming spaces for prevention programming, youth engagement, and family support. Key features include a teaching kitchen, a round ceremonial room, a library, youth area, and office spaces. This new facility reinforces Shoal Lake 40 First Nation’s commitment to fostering wellness and strengthening community connections through culturally grounded services.

The Prevention Building will expand and enhance programs for families, children, and youth by providing additional space for culturally informed programming. It creates an opportunity to implement approaches rooted in substantive equality and traditional knowledge. The new space will support a wide range of prevention activities aimed at promoting the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness of First Nations children, youth, young adults, and families.

As the community continues to reconnect with its language and culture, the centre will play a key role in reclaiming and restoring traditional practices that redefine care for children in vulnerable or unstable family environments. By offering a dedicated space for intergenerational, family-focused prevention programs, the facility will help reduce apprehensions and minimize re-entries into protective services. The additional office space will also allow the agency to hire much-needed staff to support the growing demand for culturally grounded services.
